Mansfield man in court for failing to pay Council Tax
A Mansfield man has received a suspended jail sentence for refusing to pay Council Tax after his name was written in capital letters on correspondence from Mansfield District Council.
Mr Adrian May, aged 54, of Princes Street, Mansfield, had not paid any Council Tax since May 2015, Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told on Wednesday 13 February 2019.
Mr May was sentenced to 56 days in prison, suspended upon payment of £2,573.78 and costs of £305 within 28 days.
The court heard he had not paid his Council Tax on a point of principle but that Mr May was now willing to pay.
After the case, Cllr Roger Sutcliffe, Portfolio Holder for Finance, said: “We have a statutory responsibility to collect Council Tax and failure to pay your bill could result in us taking enforcement action.
