About Me

I have lived in Mansfield since 1979 and live in the Eakring ward. Married with four grown up children who all live in Mansfield. I am passionate about Mansfield. I am proud of the part I played in forcing the Council to hold a Referendum in 2001 and to have followed up that victory by getting Tony Egginton elected as our Mayor in 2002, 2008 and 2011 and then in May 2015 I ran Kate Allsop's successful Mayoral election campaign and at the same time was elected to serve the residents of the Eakring ward.

I would like your help in ensuring that we have a safe and well maintained ward. I hope to have at least one person on every one of the 46 streets in the ward to become a “street champion” and to keep me advised of any issues that they see. I am making regular visits around the ward as I go about my council, commercial and social activities but it would be very helpful to have some direct support from residents who can provide information about events or activities on their street. In return I will keep you aware of what I am doing and what the Council is working on.

To become a “street champion” all you need to do is have access to a current e-mail address so that I can contact you easily and give you the opportunity of influencing how I will vote on the key issues that come before the Council. I would anticipate a monthly update from me.

If you would like to play a positive part in improving our neighborhood please let me know by calling me on 01623 706410 or e-mail me at stewart@eakring.org.uk

My Election Campaigns CV

  • January 2001 began the task of creating a petition of over 4500 names to force MDC to hold a Referendum on what type of local government the people of Mansfield wanted
  • May 2002 ran the Referendum campaign and won the choice of a Mayor & Cabinet
  • October 2002 ran the campaign to get Tony Egginton elected as Mansfield’s first directly elected Executive Mayor
  • May 2003 ran the Independent Forum campaign and got 25 IF councillors elected, including myself, breaking the Labour stranglehold on MDC of the previous 30 years
  • May 2005 stood against Alan Meale in the general election and came third beating the LibDem candidate into fourth and narrowly missing out on coming second.  Achieved the most votes nationally as an Independent candidate apart from the one sitting Independent MP who was returned.
  • May 2007 ran the Independent Forum campaign and got 27 IF councillors elected, myself being re-elected, cementing breaking the Labour stranglehold on MDC proving that May 2003 was not a fluke
  • August 2007 resigned as an MDC Councillor due to business pressures
  • May 2011 ran the Mayors campaign and got him elected albeit narrowly for a third term. Lack of campaign consistency by IF candidates contributed, in my opinion to the Mayors narrow victory.
  • May 2015 ran Kate Allsop's Mayoral campaign. Stood as an IF candidate for Eakring ward in District elections, successfully elected.
